So, the entire issue here is that you would have behaved differently had the imm created a new NPC and called it (for example) the ultimate archangel of truth?

No. The entire point is that If IMMs feel it acceptable to use the slay command while they're supposed to be inhabiting normal NPCs, that pretty much throws all typical IC reaction to those controlled NPCs out the window. Gods get slay, not angry orphans.

Myeh, this wasn't an orphan. I remember reading a log of King Gerevan jousting some fellow and the Imm who was controlling him emoted the entire joust and then slew him.

The Imm may have been quick to (ab)use his or her powers here, but it isn't something that can't be explained ICly.

I agree with Chem on this for the reasons he has already contributed, but with a bit more sympathy.

I can see your frustration, given the inconvenient location, but at the same time you have to learn to laugh at stuff sometimes.
