In regards to this, a development within the area of brain research in the last few years has shown that it should be possible for us to have telepathic communication with devices implanted in the brain. As to when such technologies would be developed, your guess is as good as mine.
And in the '50s, they had all kinds of crazy ideas regarding the technology they thought would be common by now. I'm sure there are tons of theories these days that would blow my mind, but until they're proven to work, I have no reason to give them any more credit than being a possibility, someday, maybe.

This is already in practice though, at least for deaf people with auditory implants which enable them to hear, and was developed, I believe, in the 20th century.
The fact that the possibility is there is pretty fascinating, I'll give you that. As for realism being skewed, I won't deny that statement. There are plenty of things perceived to be very real that can't be proven or explained. But the kind of technology you're talking about that would allow people to communicate telepathically doesn't exist yet. It's just a theory, based on a technology we do have, which helps the hearing impaired to do something very real and measurable - hear.

And yes, when I say "realistic" I always mean within the SK setting
Fair enough.

In any case, the original idea is an awesome one.
