If they make battle-spears a non-reaching weapon, that's going to be the lamest thing I've seen yet.

I think it would be great if only warrior types could use warrior type weapons. Reaching weapons are for warrior types. The halberd or pike would replace battlespear or whatever. Don't bunch your panties up too much though, because everyone has suggested plenty of outrageous ideas before. Dulrik lets the ideas stew quite thoroughly before adding them.

How would non-warriors level up in a game where XP mostly comes from doing warrior things, without the ability to be protected by a warrior-like pet when you don't have warrior toughness?

Spells or special attacks probably. That's what most people use. There are decent warrior type pets out there, they just aren't invincible.

i would say, polemaces are essential to a leveling priest (unless you are a dwarf or griffon) its kinda hard to make it to jman without reach seeing that you get no damage spells untill then. And spears SHOULD reach i think, it does make since, same way with some other weapons. hahaha, and bandalore just needs a mild speed gimp imo, although it isnt THAT brutal if you go mood defensive with a shield and are a fighter class with ok dex. my dwarf merc wasnt really affected by them. and without them how would people destroy swashies so easily?

I'd actually be okay with making polearms the only reaching weapons, but there would have to be at least one exception, and a few classes would need to get ze polearm skill. That exception would need to be battlespear (for the sake of the Scout class), and I would be in favor of revamping the weapon's stats to fit the role. If battlespear was given the same stats as hunting spear, plus reach and minus a tiny bit of speed, I'd be happy with it (you might want to buff the damage a bit as well). Subtracting the speed would make it -just- slow enough that a level 50 specialized merc/furied barb wouldn't be able to get 5 hits a round with it. It would be an "okay" weapon for those classes, but no better than, say, longsword. Scouts, on the other hand, would be getting three very accurate hits per round at what I'd think would still be more or less acceptable damage. This way, you're encouraging mercs/barbs to use polearms for reaching weapons, but not wimping the scout class. I think.

Oh, and you'd need to give priests and warlocks the polearm skill. Two hits a round with an inaccurate weapon wouldn't be gamebreaking, and you can't tell me a priest with a halberd is going to hit anything often enough to make any difference in PK.
