No, forcing them to be the leader to extend their presence over the entire group is much similar to forcing the merc to lead the group to retreat.

If you are alone intimidate works, you lead the group and it works for everyone, if you defer leadership to another then intimidate only works on you.

spidermonkey are you:

A) First attempting to target the hellion then another member of the group?

B) First attempting to target another member of the Hellion's group?

Not sure if you do A and get intimidated if you really can start a battle at all, does either instance even matter?

Group + hellion

I attack group mate in front row, back row hellion's intimidate stops me from being able to attack, I am no longer able to engage group until A) they attack me B) Intimidate wears off.

If I were to attack Hellion in said group then intimidate should affect me.

If I attack a groupmate intimidate should not affect me unless hellion is leading.

Logic is not to bypass intimidate by attacking pet, but not allow an entire group to use the intimidate of grouped hellion to stop ranged attacks and such.

My logic is simple it is a tactical decision, do you want intimidate to affect the entire group, if so have the hellion lead, do you want the benifit of someone else leading, then take that benifit.

I hate trying to attack another pc in a group and a hellion's intimidate stops me.

You walk up to a group where someone intimidating is present. You can think that you can pick off one of the weaker ones. As you get closer to the target, you realize how stupid it is because of the presence of the hellion. It isn't about who is leading, or where they are placed in the group. You become intimidated by the presence of the hellion because they decided to extend their protection to someone at that moment. The thought of earning the ire of the hellion becomes too much to bear, so you become intimidated. Want to overcome the fear? Willpower.

Curious, in the scenario, if the hellion was invis and/or hidden and the attacker couldn't sense them for some reason. Does intimidate still work?

You use the term "decided" then it should be a decision to "extend" that aura.

I am a room away and I see the hellion and go oh crap I don't want to shoot him, guy might gut me, so I will pick off that little guy to his right and beat feet.

If the hellion was an awesome leader and looming in front of his comrades and chosing to show he is the leader and the dominace of this group, then I can see him scaring me off of attacking the group.

As it is it's a mechanical advantage and if there are more than one hellions in a group then you have to break both their checks to attack that group.

ONLY thing I am suggesting is to remove the group affect unless the hellion is leading. This will only impact those hellions in large groups being led by another. A lone hellion with trib NPC+pet+dominate will be leading and be extending their intimidate over the group.

If you actually hated it, you would either A) leave the hellion alone or B) get some willpower.

If, instead, you just wanted to complain, you'd go and make a stupid forum post about it.

I see a mechanic that does not look right and I am making my point why.

It seems the only difference we are having is the hellion extending the intimidate to the group when they aren't leading.

Any other mechanic of this skill seems correct.

I don't see why not. It is a presence, an aura. Something that you can sense, though you may not know why. A sense of foreboding that only comes into play when attempting to attack someone the hellion is grouped with.

This is working as intended.

Code:
> help intimidate
[Skills help] intimidate

Automatic

The hellion's powerful unholy presence manifests itself as a supernatural
fear once this skill is learned.  Anyone attempting to attack the hellion or
his allies must overcome his fearsome presence or cower before him.  The
would be assailant will not be able to attempt another attack on the hellion
or his allies until he has first regained his nerve.

Hellions can only intimidate opponents that are within melee range.
