Have it a dual thing. Each symbol you blow up (of the appropriate type) hurts you a lot while at the same time, it gives your religion some sort of bonus for the week. Or if that religion did the same to you, it would remove a level of bonus.

Destroying a symbol hurting you and giving a religion a bonus?

I totally agree. To further encourage some really neat RP, I wonder if it would be possible to make each symbol, specific to the individual. That way, if someone had my character's symbol, it would say something like "a fiery red sun with the name Rubex enscribed on it".

Maybe make it impossible for someone to have another symbol made unless someone logs out with the old one. If there are more than one symbol belonging to the same person, make one or the other crumble.

I think something like this would add some incredible depth to Priest/Paladin/Hellion RP.

I find it hard to believe that we'd somehow get more RP from indestructible symbols, as though the act of destroying one doesn't generate conflict and excitement too. No piece of eq should be immune to junking, period. Though I do like Muktar's suggestion of making the destruction of symbols harder/more painful.
