This is incorrect.

Not necessarily. If you take one person, a damascus blade and a steel blade, the damascus blade will typically hold a sharper edge. It'll cut with less force, so the cut will be deeper than that of a steel blade under the same amount of force, thus doing more damage.

Steel edges on the other hand, unless things like acid edged or machine sharpened dull quickly. As Chem said, the Damascus material will "stay a sword longer" thus, in the end doing more damage, even if over time. Either one of those examples, the better quality blade will do more damage, whether it be outlasting the other, shattering it, or just having a sharper edge.

Edit: The top paragraph also reflects back during Samurai era, before guns and such. The folded steel technique used to create katana's not only made them ligther but gave them a sharper edge than those of the longswords and other typical swords used at the time. They would cut with less force.

As for your argument about force, you're missing a few things. Or at least wording them wrong.

Quote:

If in both instances, the same amount of force is used, the cut will have the same amount of force. Force doesn't magically go away because the sword is composed of a different material. It has to go somewhere - and that somewhere is into the cut. I understand what you're saying, though - the surface area where the force is APPLIED to is smaller, if it has a sharper edge.

Keep in mind, quality of the weapon already affects damage done. This is the reason why crappier materials are disregarded, and not as sought after as higher end materials. They break faster, they do slightly less damage while in the process of being broken, etc. Somewhere in the game, you can find weapons made of wood (that aren't newbie material!)...but no one uses them. Why? Because they will do crap for damage against someone armored, and will likely break in one or two hits. These are, as it happens, the same things that you are suggesting needs to be addressed. They're already being accounted for.

Material is meaningless because repairs are instant and damage to weapons that are steel+ happens extremely slowly due to Dulrik's exceedingly well thought out code changes after cold iron was implemented.

I think you mean steal -, he made the crappier materials wear slower, not the better ones.

He made cold iron wear slower, doesn't that count as steel+?

Seriously, people will still die in the time of one bash without the resting damage modifier.

And yes, weapons very rarely get very damaged, they pretty much always seem to stay at superb. You can be at superb, get the "a series of fractures!" message, and still be at superb.

Sure, some subtypes should be better than others(though honestly, not as MASSIVELY BETTER like they are now), the problem is, that area designers or whoever, decide to add like 50 of these weapons. Come on guys!

And then you get subtypes like this. And this weapon is actually pretty decent, unless it got wimped in the past couple years(the only high quality one in the game that I've ever seen got wimped, along with a certain necro's eq).

Nothing like that in heaven or earth.

A heavy steel khukri carried by Nianne.

It's not like people are hoarding khukris, that is seriously probably like the only one in the game

Why even bother having khukris as a subtype? Half of the mud probably didn't even know it was a subtype.

--------

Polearms? Only people that use lances are Hammer members, and you -might- see somebody use a naginate every once in a while.

Whips? Only whip used, ever, are battle-whips.

Maces? Don't make me laugh, please. Only people that use maces tend to be casters who want a reaching weapon, and only pole-maces get used.

Flails? Uh, Enfield uses them I guess. Seems to use his battlespear most of the time though. I've personally never used a flail or seen anyone use it for anything(other than Enfield) other than to just master the skill for mentoring.

Staves(weapon version)? Uh, only one I ever see used is the Psi Rod, by shamans.

Sorry, it should be cold iron - then.

Agreed.

I can tell you that I've never added one because I didn't even know what a khukri was until I read this post and started reading up on it. I'll try and think about their place in the world of SK thematically.

Also, the khukri thing was just an example, quite a few subtypes are like that I think. The Sai subtype is the only one I can think of ATM, without sitting and locating a lot.

I personally think a pair of Sais would be great weapons for a swashie, sadly the subtype sucks horribly(one of the lowest damages in the game) and the only ones I've ever seen are stone, and I -think- there might be a pair made out of tanso. Could be wrong.

Another thing I really, really hate, okay, let's look at khopeshes real quick. You've got like 5-6 addy/energy/diamond ones. Then let's look at wakizashis, which aren't -great-, but are one of my favorite subtypes. If you want one sturdier than mithril, you have to join a religion specifically for its weapon.

Also, the problem with D-A's idea of reducing the number of elite stuff and adding more high quality not-elite stuff is that some stuff just SUCKS HORRIBLY. Like, I've toyed with the idea of making a merc spec'd in Scythe, just so I can use the Scythe of Storms and Sorrow or whatever, and set my title to The Harvester of Sorrow. ^_^
Sadly, scythes are sickeningly horrible.
