Half of what Gilgon is doing, every other mage can do also. Most of his army is wights. Wands or scrolls of animate are almost better than the spell, since, presumably, the undead last as long, and require no concentration. The only downside is that they're wights instead of wraiths. Tell me if I'm wrong.

This is correct. The wights are only as high level as the wand (which is level 44 in the case of the wand I use, but there are also store bought level 20ish wands). These wights do not require concentration.

Wights, though, do not get berserk/fury/wild fighting and are not able to fly. I still use 10+ wraiths whenever I pkill because although wights do the majority of the intimidation, wraiths still do the majority of the damage.

Wights are mercenaries, right?

Yes, but they are mercenaries without specialize or rallying cry.

I would say they do about 3/5 the damage a wraith does, on top of the inability to fly (and they lose accuracy if they are made to fly magically).

I've seen them use crossbows, but you have to order each fire. They won't autofire.

Animates are weak, as I have seen a a single fist melee through a wight in one round. The second wight got thrown out and guess what....the necro is suddenly front row and all of this is even before a FoD can be cast. Add to the fact the necro can be backstabbed in the back row or be reached by a polearm in the second row.

Animates lost a lot of abilites pc's get and even the charmies got the shaft by losing a lot of abilities. Animates get no autofire-skirmish, and they are highly inaccurate with other weapons.

But please, please hit them with a nerf because other classes have access to those wands and can make undead also. And also those ethereal wands because other classes cannot use them also.
