Since lolth is asking for a pole, I would say aiming lower is a valid tactic also.

I don't know if this is a possible fix, but maybe remove or greatly reduce the effective level of dirt kicking for NPCs just in the newbie areas and in the main newbie training grounds (up to say, level 10, for instance)? If it were possible to just change those NPCs, it would go a long way to making things more newbie friendly for levelling, without disturbing the balance for the rest of the mud.

I also like the dirt goggles idea a lot, if that's more practical.

How hard can it be?

Remove dirt kick for NPCs in areas where you level from 0-15 and leave the rest. Dirt kick shouldn't be a problem on higher levels.
