hee hee, I also remember being cursed a level by dulrik for 'abusing' deathmark and pardon in order to find someone's adjective. My abuse was finding this and sending a log of it to Algorab of the time, who then turned it to dulrik.

It was quite a wtf moment until it was cleared out :P

If banishment is given in the form of old deathmark, you can expect any miscreant/diabolic leader of the MC and even more the Hand to simply banish everyone when they see him on who list. Guilty until proven innocent and such.

I know I'd do it as Golg.

Imagine all the crying though, how you make this game so unfriendly to everyone, how they are suddenly cut off from 1/6 of the SK from lvl 1 without actually doing anything etc etc.

Attempting to derail this into a deathmark re-introduction or tweaking of banishment won't get anything changed. Same goes for having jail impact a character's experience: I'm sure Dulrik would require a massively convincing argument to open that can of worms (and even then I'd say it'd be doubtful).

I'm not saying I'm the only one with a solution (i.e. the equipment/coin/jail time scale idea); by all means come up with ideas if you think they can improve the situation that is being complained about - just try to steer clear of ideas that go backwards such as deathmark, etc.

Perm death characters when executed, that'll prevent those who try to avoid banishments.

I wish all jail sentences had a limit of a hour and the rest after that is removed when you are executed, lose all wealth including in the bank, and all equipment. That seems like a harsh enough punishment for any character. More than that doesn't really add to the fun of the game.

Here's a crazy idea that will be insta-killed due to the inanity of it but that never stopped me from throwing them out. Anything over a RL hour in jail gets cut to an hour and money, gear loss and execution. Any with fewer than 5 platinum per level for the first 59 RL minutes beyond the hour (which would be 25 obsid at GM) would have a bank debt to cover the shortfall. Each additional RL hour truncated would add a platinum per level necessity. Those with outrageously massive jail terms would have large bank debts. Of course, they could then start carrying all their wealth with them instead of retiring the debt but that would risk losing it to other players.

I don't think this would be any true encumbrance because those who gain such noteriety are well capable of taking care of themselves in whichever way they desire. But it would still add a bit of sting to the penalty for 5-page crime lists.

As I said, crazy idea that'll get insta-killed.
