Also, while I'm posting to this thread, I want to remind people that when you gain loyalty tokens they can only be used on a future character. This should also be considered a ground rule.

Finney's idea to allow you to decrease your age/increase your maximum age is interesting, but is a bit counter-intuitive, since that character you've played for a long, long time and probably earned you a lot of LT isn't eligible to use them.

I think only being able to spend loyalty tokens on future characters is the counter intuitive part of the equation - I had forgotten about that when I posted my idea. Wouldn't it be better for the health of the game to encourage people to play long-lived characters than to offer benefits on new characters via loyalty tokens?

Only way that seems possible is to allow loyalty tokens to be spent by the character that earns them. Otherwise, it encourages players to create new characters to benefit from the tokens earned by their current character.

Fountain of Youth idea is one of the best in here, I think.

5 coins per year.

I want to ask about this "future characters only" thing.
Does this mean that you are only able to spend tokens in the halls of creation? Or does it mean that you only can use the points you earned on your last character?

Let's say we come up with "in game spending."
You have 10 from your last character. You gain five more on you're current.
Are you only allowed to spend the 10/15 while on your current? (Spending on in-game content)

Or is in-game LT content not going to happen?

The methods for earning loyalty tokens are geared to promoting long-term play. Spending loyalty-tokens is the reward for coming back with a new character. The best uses of loyalty tokens would be to enhance long-term play for the new character, not things that are short-term benefits.

Fair enough. After thinking about it a while, I am not sure I like the idea of tokens being able to reduce age and/or extend life span, since that would take away the incentive to play longer lived races like elf, deep-elf and gnome.

Allow for some truly unique snowflakes then.

I understand your view of the game and how you want it. I also hear you saying these LTs are a reward for long term characters. If you place very high price tags on very cool things, the only people who are going to be able to afford it are those who have played and earned it. I am not sure the rate at which everyone else earns loyalty tokens but I know it has taken me months to get five, if I have to pay 100 tokens for an alignment shift on a sprite and then 80 to pay for a paladin, by gods it's going to take me real life years.

If loyalty tokens are a perk, allow them to be a perk. If they unbalance the game slightly, just slightly, then it's rewarded only to those people who have put in the time, blood, sweat, and tears to earn that privilege. Allow people to play the snowflake if they earn it, but don't make snowflakes cheap so everyone is rolling one.

Loyalty tokens come easy when you roleplay regularly, lead factions and religions, or be really good at CRS defense.

Proportionally high costs.

The point is to make people earn their snowflake.

One thought which could give a bit more longevity to physical related stat classes is to use loyalty points to offset the age penalties that they would normally incur in their max stats.

Fit rewards or whatever, so you could have a spry 80 year old human, who although may still age death, can still swing a sword with vigour.

Right now the mental based classes do seem to have an edge for the long-term play.

Functionally, this wouldn't work if it was something that was like "spend 20 tokens, avoid suffering from age penalties" because any remotely decent character long-lived enough to suffer from age penalties would easily be able to pay it. Therefore you'd just be removing aging penalties. An interesting idea might be a hall of creation option to pay 80 tokens to avoid suffering aging penalties - that'd provide a relatively steep cost AND strong incentive to play a new character through to age death.
