Climb sucks. The chance of success needs to be raised, this skill isn't really that useful and when you try to use it nearly kills you.

Code:
> n
It's too steep for you to climb unaided.
You follow Dubin north.
You attempt to climb but slip and fall at over fifty feet!

[HP: 85%] [ME:100%] [PE: 74%]
> n
You stop following Dubin.
You attempt to climb but slip and fall at over fifty feet!

[HP: 71%] [ME:100%] [PE: 74%]

[HP: 57%] [ME:100%] [PE: 74%]
> n

[HP: 42%] [ME:100%] [PE: 74%]
> n

Dubin soars in from the north.

[HP: 35%] [ME:100%] [PE: 74%]
> say I'm going to die on this mountain
You say 'I'm going to die on this mountain'

[HP: 35%] [ME:100%] [PE: 74%]
> gt ooc climb sucks [REDACTED]
You tell the group 'ooc climb sucks [REDACTED]'

[HP: 35%] [ME: 98%] [PE: 74%]
> say Can you heal me?
You ask 'Can you heal me?'

This is a sample of me trying to use climb to get over some mountains. What's the point of having this skill if it's impossible to master it, or even use it. Granted my character has a low dex and is only fair at climbing but give me a break.

That log, btw, is a small sampling of what happened for the forums. It was actually twice as bad as that.

I'm pretty sure that it matters what kind of mountain it is. From my tests, the white, snow capped ones, are higher and have a greater chance of failure. I almost never try these because it is really hard not to take at least some damage. The brown ones I can practically waltz over, maybe even tango.

I'm not sure about your test, though, or what stats you need to make this better. I have a pretty high dex and not so great str. I would think it would be either one of those two.

Hope that helps?

P.S.

Just to warn you, someone is bound to pop in here with the famous "Be leet and fly, not a newb and die." Hope I got the quote right, but the general rule is to fly.

Icy mountains have a larger chance to slip than normal mountains.
You basically fall a lot until you get it to very good.
Better your skill less damage you take and less distance fallen.
Time consuming to train.

It's still fun when your one of he few people good at climbing and you can just walk off into the mountains leaving behind everyone else.

There are some mountains you just can't climb, though.

Climb the skill of death. I never train it because it can get you killed so easy. Just fly, there are few times when it is too windy to do it but those thems I live with my choice and continue to live.

Why even have climb then? If the skill is so useless you should fly instead of risk trying to walk it's pointless.

You're smoking rocks, Calfalos.

I'm willing to bet that you have an incredibly [REDACTED] climb skill too.

All-in-all this log doesn't help us to identify anything. What was your rating at climb when you attempted this?

Quote:
Climb allows you to cross mountains and cliffs in the wilderness,
although cliffs and snowy mountains are harder to cross than regular
mountains. Climbing can be hampered somewhat by loss of limbs or the
presence of a rider on your back. If you are mounted, only the climb
ability of the mount matters - you will be carried along based on
whether or not your mount succeeds.

When you fail a climb check, you are likely to fall. The worse your
climbing skill, the more likely it is that you will fall farther.

Falling causes damage proportional to the distance you've fallen.

I'm just curious. I'm a SK newb, by the by, but if climb is maxed, then it should work 99.5% of the time on normal mountains (5/1000 fails), and 90-95% (1/10 to 1/20 fails) of the time on snow covered. Maybe with a bit of dice based on str or dex, but if someone here does have a maxed climb do they care to share thier experiance?

I know that cause light pissed me off until I got it maxed, and now it just doesn't fail. I can spam it till my mana runs dry and hit every time. So what am I pissed about? cause serious. I spam it and only about 50% of the time it goes off. I expect around the same with climb, but because of the nature of the skill I would expect even at max a very small percentage of failure.
