Why do they get tinder boxes and no torches?

For the one person who voted no, would you care to provide a reason?

Chars should be given a glowing item not a torch and tinderbox.
<right hand> (Glowing) a bead of light.
Considering the level of spells the priest casts on lowbies continual light should be offered to newbies. Notice the object is hand held so most would go out and look for a better thing. Torches are redundant technology from history when you look at the magic available to the world of SK.
(PS) Voted yes anyway because a light should be easy to get as a low level char.

Sure, glowing item, that'd be even better. Either way, some sort of light source.

3 No votes? What the hell. They're probably the same people who voted against giving new chars waterskins.

Ya know what I can't understand starting out with? The sextant. Who the hell uses a sextant?

I wonder if the tinder box was from the original unedited form of the Mud.

I vote yes for the light. Nothing worse than a blind lost newbie.

Occasionally they come in handy. Not friggin' often, I'll concede.

I'd really like to see more books and maps refer to directions by using sextant coordinates. Perhaps I can at least add the coordinates for the major cities to their descriptions on the web page.

I always thought sextants were a cool idea. I was disappointed to figure out that they were almost totally useless.

<3 the glowy beads.

Sextants are really a good idea, and not totally useless, it's just that no one really feels the need to explore enough. It's good that newbies get them so that they at least know they exist.

When I first started to play SK, I used sextants all the time. Sextants could be one of the best newb tools out there.
