Make staffs reach already, they are mediocre in combat and they are almost never used which would change if they were given reach.

my 2 cents

sure give them reach, but they will still be terribly useless.

Voted yes.

The staff is not an -absolutely- useless weapon. For instance.. They're great for smashing those annoying little bugs - I mean, sprites - running around the game like moronic children in a candy store.

How can you imagine a staff having reach? Unless you plan to use it as a wooden polearm.

Staffs can be long, and some even have blades. If you were in a fight someone could definitely reach your opponent with a staff while standing behind you.

Staves are hold mainly from the middle of their length.

Is a staff longer than 2 flamberges or greatswords in a row?

If it is, you are using the wrong size of the weapon.

Shut up already, staffs are not mainly held by the middle. They are held everywhere. Sometimes the ends, sometimes the middle, sometimes between the ends and middle. Where the heck did you get that and why are you trying to squash this good idea DA?

We call any staff held by the end a polemace, and we stick it in the mace weapon class.

I'm all in favor of seeing some staff weapons that are actually worth using, but I see no need for reach. I believe the only class this limits is sorcs, and I don't see them needing a boost. Sorcs can use crossbows or thrown daggers if they want to use weapons from the back.

The dynamic of staff combat does not constitute a grip by the midsection of the weapon.

There are some staffs that aren't even covered by the weapon subtypes that could be made available. Dulrik & co. didn't include every available weapon out there that is in existence. If there is room for including new ones then I think you should think on that.

However, I don't think reach is the solution that needs to be implemented. I think that weapons need to be re-evaluated as some classes of weapons are complete garbage, thus creating the necessity for some weapons to be completely ignored by the playerbase. This in turn creates the hype and proliferation of mercenaries only specializing in particular weapon (IE flamberge). I feel that mercenaries and barbarians, the two classes that excel the most in the use of weapon classes need more incentive to extend the need to use *other* type of weapons, instead of just a few extreme weapon types.

I think Dulrik just needs to re-evaluate weapons for the classes of mace/staff/flail. Perhaps using suggestion from the playerbase in doing this. I have nothing to offer at the moment, however.
