I'm not going to comment on the fact that I have mastered the spell charm person, I have about 10 art, and still the spell fails half the time on NPCs under half the level of my character, I'll push that aside because I don't expect a charm person buff. As you can see I'm fighting this dwarf because I obviously failed my first charm attempt.
What I would like to see happen is when you actually land the spell, if you are fighting I'd like to see combat stop with person you have charmed. Sort of like when you are in combat with someone and put them to sleep. You just stop attacking once the charm lands, the whole group does. I don't think that's an unreasonable expectation.
