I agree. The combination of too few players and too many player groups means fewer players per group.

I also agree that we should try to increase SK membership. There's no reason why other measures cannot be taken in parallel, however.

Uhm when I asked about cabals I was told that cabals can only have a certain number of players and that I was the wrong class because that cabal had my class already so this suggests that at least one cabal is almost full.

Whoever told you that was completely wrong. The only case where a class should not be accepted is a barbarian in the FIST, which Dulrik has said is no good.

I imagine also that necromancers might find it difficult to join the Hammer, or paladins to join the council of necromancers, but other than such extreme cases, the person was absolutely wrong.

Out of curiosity, what was the cabal?

There's no mechanics restriction on numbers. Dunno though, maybe the cabal in question was RPing a limit?

Or they just didn't want to tell you how bad you were. :P

There has been at least one instance in which a cabal was limited after they had too many members. Currently even the largest factions are a ways off from that number.

Whoever told you that needs to be slapped.

I got told that once, too.

But . . . Umiro's an [REDACTED], and I was better off as an Adept.

Well I must say that this instance was pretty lame and if said person was a member of that cabal then I have wasted my time on this char and have to start all over again. Now wonder the numbers are low?

That's a rather poor attitude to take, despite how you may have been slighted. Take the experience as a part of your character and let him or her grow with it. They can end up in a completely different place than you intended them and still be fun.

I'm going to write in the disclaimer that while NO character is guaranteed a spot in a cabal ever, leaders should at very least give you an answer and not make up lame, baseless excuses.

Would they have inducted you anyway? Maybe? I don't know. I know both times I had the flags I turned people away. But I did so with IC reasons that they were told directly. And I also told them whether or not they could amend their actions/behaviors to fit the cabal so that they might be reconsidered. A couple of people I just gave a flat "NO" to, but in most cases, there should be a way to groom yourself for cabal life.

I'd go back and ask for a straight answer.
