I can see some abuse to this, goto jail and log out for the night, come back tomorrow and its all good. Defenders wont even know you are in. |

Hm. I realize the Hobbit's kidding, but that's actually not a bad idea in some respects. Maybe if time logged out counted for jail time at a reduced rate--say you get one day in prison (20 mins), then if you were to log out for two hours and forty minutes your jail time would be over. Eh. Maybe. |

you continue to age while logged out. time still goes on when you're logged out. jail time.. would logically.. pass as well.. Abused or not jail time is annoying. Confiscation of all wealth and equipment is bad enough. *scoff* |

I was not joking. But I do like the idea of a reduced rate of jail time while logged off. |

Actually...... This isn't that bad of an idea. It keeps you out of the game either way, and if you rack up 100+ crimes it's better to log off and chill for a bit, *read 40 hours*, than try to sit afk for 40 hours waiting to play again. When you relog, you automatically go to the judge, and if you are banished you get random teleported. This actually isn't that bad of an idea, when you think of the IC/OOC implications. Add an *in jail* flag to the character's profile, and if you are "in jail", your crimes still show on the outlaw list for you to be banished/pardoned/whatever, and they are not removed until you relog and get out of jail. This would be to prevent people who commit crimes, go to jail, and then log off to avoid banishment. |

It actually sounds like a pretty good idea, with some tweaking and all that. |

Keeping an extremely powerful criminal in jail for an extended period should cost the tribunal money. If it cost perhaps 5 platinum per day to keep a GM convict in jail, tribunals might have more incentive to make deals for pardons or work to change the sentences to exclude extensive jail time. For example, someone sentenced to 100 days of jail time would cost the tribunal 50 obsidian. An offer to have 25 obsidian delivered as a fine instead of the 100 days might be easier to consider. In the real world, catching, convicting and punishing criminals is expensive and time consuming. If you remove the costs of gathering evidence, the chance that the suspect is innocent (or might be found not guilty) and the costs of storing the convicts then you have a very biased system with no incentive to give anything less than the maximum allowable penalty. |
