As it stands currently, we have two-stage vision. A char either can see in the dark or it cannot. Also, seeing in the dark is limited to the room the char is in and not to adjoining rooms.

I propose three-stage vision. A char would be able to see in the dark, see at night or see in daylight only. This would be based entirely on race. The spell infravision would cause dark sight. In addition, dark vision would allow the char to see underground all the adjoining rooms and beyond as if above ground in daylight. Glowing items would only allow vision of that room and night vision would allow that room and any directly adjoining rooms, provided it is above ground at night and not underground.

Dark vision would allow people to actually see other rooms beyond the room they're in. Infravision would have more uses and might actually be cast on people on a much more regular basis. Some races which need some help might get a minor bonus. Differentiation between night and dark might add more flavor.

I actually think this would be a neat idea, but I predict it getting buried.

I predict Gameplay will result in less flaming and more discussion of the topic. Arcaicsmurf, got a comment in regards to the topic?

I think that it would be neat, but there is much other stuff that should be dealt with.

I do not think it would work well on SK.

However, I would prefer infravision to darkvision.

Darkvision seems to be some grotesque abomination devised by 3d edition wanker builders who could only think dungeons and PC's.

Darkvision seems to be limited to a certain range which means that, those drow in menzoberanzan can't see jack [REDACTED] after a certain range and so armies in the underdark bump into one another sort of like in any fog of war strategy game, where the fog starts at about 120 feet.

Ridiculous!

For clarity's sake:

Dark vision underground == day vision mid-day above ground in cities
Night vision above ground at night > current dark vision
.....You would be able to see into adjacent rooms.
Glowing objects would still only light up that particular room.
Infravision would give the target the new dark vision.

Nobody who isn't already bumping into each other would bump into each other if they have the new dark vision.

In reality, the human eye is made up of a series of cells that analyse light. The vast percentage of these cells "see" in color and need light to work. However, we have a much, much small percentage of cells that only "see" in black and white and need much less light that turn on when we are in a dark place.

This is why it takes a minute to see in a dark room for a real person. Your black and white cells must turn on.

This is also why bright lights after being in a dark room hurt, your eyes have to switch over.

What does this mean?

Basically, I would say give people the ability to only see their current room in terrain that is open like plains, but not closed terrain like indoors or a forest.

Stars exist in sk. Yay!

As for infravision. There needs to be a discrepancy here... Some animals have much better eyes than people, natural infravision should stay as it is. As for infravision, it would be hard to really change to be otherwise. best left alone.
