Post subject: | Mentors |
I recently created a few characters and there has been one common factor for all of them: shortly after creating, I was pestered by what I consider overly aggressive mentors. I understand mentors are probably very helpful for new players, but as a veteran, I don't need any help. However, short of telling these mentors to bugger off OOC, it's like trying to get rid of a door-to-door salesman. I can only assume this is because additional stat trains have been tied to the mentor system as an incentive. I am fine with that and I don't think there should be any drastic changes. It would be nice, though, if during the creation process we were offered a toggle or opt in/out question for the mentor system. If you answer no to “Are you new to Shattered Kingdoms?” then add another question inquiring if you wish to participate in the mentor system. If you answer yes to “Are you new to Shattered Kingdoms?” then you would automatically be opted in as these are the players that would really need the help. |

Geeze, I've always had the opposite problem. I can never find a mentor. ![]() |

Yeah, I think everyone else is pretty happy with the mentor system. I guess it wouldn't hurt to have the option during creation, though. |

Are you complaining if someone asks can they aid then they says let them know if you need anything? Or do they hound you to let them help? |

I think I was pretty clear in my original post. Frankly, I'd rather not resort to citing specific incidents or posting character names, as I'm sure the players involved were motivated by good intentions and a desire to help. That being said, it is still irritating to spend the first twenty minutes on a new character trying to politely tell a mentor to go away without going OOC. |

You have a point. I have never had anyone bug me, and do not do it myself. But I usually send a tell letting them know I can help if they need it. |

Quiet mode? "No thank you, I'm fine.";quiet Though like others said, there's no reason not to have the option. Just giving suggestions for the here and now. |

I swear, you people look way too far for things to complain about. |

Simpler than that: the suggestion should be if a player answers the question "Are you new to Shattered Kingdoms?" as a "No" then do not send an XXX has enrolled in training message to all available mentors. Isn't this how it is supposed to work? Veterans/Newbies alike would still be able to manually request. Just turn off the notification based on that question. And by the way, if you were that caster who rolled in the North yesterday or the day before it was my character who demanded you identify yourself. That's not being 'pushy b/c of mentor pts' - that's running a city/country/whatever with an iron fist. There's a difference between a random mentor foisting themselves on you and a tribunal leader wanting to know who you are and making sure you get off to a good start. Doesn't scale well and it isn't supposed to, that's how it is right now. |

![]() I thought that was just me. It would have been nice to have even just a simple greeting from one when I created or when I was able to be mentored. By the time I knew how valuable a resource it was, I couldn't use it any longer. As far as telling someone willing to mentor you politely, I am sure a simple no thanks, but I'll keep your name handy would work and probably get the point across that you are not a new player. |
