Why would I not even get a level out of an area such as the chancel before I become familiar with it? Seems like I should be able to get a little more out of an area.

Depends on when you go. Allow me to oversimplify things greatly:

*Let's say it takes 2000 xp to get to level 2, 3000 xp to get to level 3, et cetera.
*Let's also say that NPC X, and NPC Y are both within range of an amateur character. NPC X offers 25 xp, and NPC Y offers 100 xp.
*Finally, let's say that an area gives you a certain number of xp points before a familiar tick.

Considering these things, if you begin with NPC Y in Area A, you will notice very quick advancement. Going later to NPC X in Area B will take more time to gain the same number of xp points, PLUS you need more xp to advance. Your familiarity could suffer in this manner.

Make sense?

I guess, I just thought as a mentor 1 I would get more then 6 ticks without becoming familiar with the area

Also depends on what you're fighting. There's a range of NPCs there. I'd advise you to maybe do some asking around IC about that area. Though, realistically, at this point, you're not going to be able to go through an entire status in one area without massive penalties to familiarity. Good luck! :)

Which is why I told him to ask IC ;)

Eh, explaining familiarity IC is kind of silly.

You can downgrade your familiarity and double your pleasure by grouping with someone who is at a lower familiarity stage than you.

It's all in help worth.

Beware melee characters who want to just abuse your caster's familiarity though. Remember, you don't gain experience from kills, but from damage.

Explaining the different parts of an area and how to access them, however, is not.

True. I didn't give out any information on the game world itself, so I feel alright.
