One day, long long ago, a barbarian needed a way to compete PvP using ranged combat. This barbarian, lets call him barb, bought a sling! He was very happy with his sling. He aimed, pulled back, and to his surprise he couldnt hit someone standing one room away! Not only did this sadden him, but he then realized nothing he can do has ANY range!

(barbs need bow or crossbow or SOMETHING to give them range)

They don't is the thing. They're not highly specialized fighters/tactical fighters and so it makes sense in PVE that they need someone else around if they want NPCs lured. Mechanically, they're A-ok in the PVP scene, have a 3row option with sling, and, frankly, ranged combat with the fury bonus would probably be laughably overpowered. I think this is 99% an RP argument, though, and the skillset they have just does not support adding highly tactical skills like bow/xbow. They're brutal melee combatants.

A giant would be able to boulder to get around it, but you're right about the smaller races not having range. I also kind of think they shouldn't, as pat suggests. They are raging wildmen, they're not going to sit around and aim. They're going to rush in and rip [REDACTED] apart.

Hey, patrisaurus, you don't have to have the bow skill trained in order to use a bow to draw a NPC in from a room away. You will miss the NPC, then it will come to you. Newb.

Yeah, I don't think barbs really need that, but its pretty hilarious that a giant barb can throw an enormous boulder into the next room but a little handheld rock is far too hard. Sling really should be changed to hit next room but if we do that barbs should maybe loose it.

It's easier to miss with a little rock than it is to miss with a big rock, unless you suck at throwing big rocks like in Braveheart.

Why not just give sling range of one room away, if it doesn't already? Then all classes can be happy.

Except every squishy class in the game who would just get faceloved by barbs with slings.

Barbs are supposed to rip through things and eat faces, not run around with a piece of leather and some rocks like a ninny.
