It was pointed out to me that if a barbarian stepped into a room where there is an aggressive weaponless rogue in the back row of an enemy NPC formation, the rogue would somehow get a counterstrike on the barbarian, even though the rogue attacked first.

Upon investigation, I determined that this was a symptom of a poorly designed section of the fight initiation code.

To fix this bug, I made a change in how the person you are fighting is determined. It's kind of high risk, so if you notice anything unexpectedly different about how the game is behaving when starting combats (particularly when people are in formation), please let me know.

Big D. I'd just like to point out that this negative item/disappearing eq seemed to start uh...after this experimental fix.

Different fix. The one described here has nothing to do with the limited item problem. See limited item bug thread for update on that.
