This is one of the reasons I quit playing, that and I've been playing other games. I pop on from time to time but that's about it. The law system is kinda screwed up. A game that is based on conflict needs villains as Tragonis said. The difference is that you shouldn't harshly punish someone for breaking the laws that badly.
It's not really that I'm against the whole jailtime thing, just the fact of how stupidly fast it can accumulate. Take Meph for example. After attacking Exile a couple of times, a warlock, with as much aoe as they have, can get as much jailtime as Trag has easily. Mine was nowhere near his time as it was only 13ish days if I recall. It's been a while. The thing is though is that with guards and bounty NPCs spawning, you can rack up crimes crazy fast.
I understand that you don't want NPC's and PC's to differ, but honestly there are times to where people on this game are icly hard to work with, and they have every right to be. I mean if you have a diabolical marfikian that shows no respect, what reason do you have to pardon them?
On the other hand, making someone sit and stare at a screen for 8-12 hours and can't move and, in some cases, can't get broken out for whatever reason isn't cool. You guys may think it's funny, but if you were on receiving ends of things like that, you'd also be complaining be it in the back of your mind or on the forums. No one would be like, "Oh, well my rescue attempt failed. I guess I'll just do the time since I killed all those guards."
Punishing a player of a game to where they can't play a game is a bad punishment. All the other kingdoms have death penalties save Zhenshi. I think after accruing so much time, then you should automatically be executed if caught and your belongings junked. The crimes wiped except banishment. Banishment should be death on sight, period.
Zhenshi however if you're wanting to keep it pure as it is, should offer the seppuku dagger like Cordance suggested.
Opey, your suggestion is somewhat flawed. Real life and SK don't mix, in any way. We're talking a world to where people hurl fireballs and such. The whole "Don't do the crime if you can't do the time" thing doesn't really fit in SK because then nothing would ever happen. The only RP you'd happen if people followed that is a lot of the "lightie" drama that typically goes on and people playing house because so few people would break laws. This game thrives on conflict.
Honestly, I'm under the impression that if a person is killed by a guard of that area then they should have their crime lists wiped as the sentence was imposed. A lot of PC's will kill invaders but not really pardon them (leave them banished if need be). I think doing that would help cut down on the excessive crime lists we see while making it somewhat fun for the darkies if they get caught. Not the "Haha, you got 60 days in jail!" Then again, people thoroughly enjoy making other players lives as miserable as possible, so I dunno.
