We all saw NPCs brewing, enchanting, etc, for big bucks a long time ago. There are two problems with that which will never be resolved.
1) Dulrik thinks that forcing people to depend on other PCs for services like this fosters interaction and RP opportunities. He doesn't believe, despite most of us telling him so, that these interactions are boring and repetitive, as much for the person providing the service as for the person receiving it, and make the game more treadmill-intensive without providing a good return on RP experiences for those hours spent.
2) The game economy itself is based on selling things to shopkeepers- not on land, livestock, labor, the production of goods and the levying of taxes. This is, itself, a treadmill.
