As someone several years removed from SK, what's the community like nowadays? What's changed? What is there to attract an old player?

Apparently there's nothing going on and no reason for an old player to return. Smurfs post has been up for over 24 hours and no one responded. It sorta looks like you guys dont want old players coming back. I know imms have been active in game while smurfs post was sitting here. I guess it just wasn't important to them to make contact with returning players since this is now the second case in the past week where imms have neglected to make contact.

I think their has been some neat recent changes and we are on the right way to making things better in the game.

My personal take was that this was a question to the community and not the staff. If you would like to know about code changes, area changes or events that have been taking place, there is a slew of information available in the Announcements and associated Q&A threads.

You can look forward to a pretty cool event for Algorween and another code update around that time as well!

Unfortunately, SK is not worth anyone's time. The staff had proven they are not interested in bringing in new players or convincing old ones to come back. I struggle to express how frustrated I am with the staff about this issue.

Dulrik has made some interesting changes and is showing that he's up for doing work, but I'm just not sure where everyone else is at. The rest of the staff is either actively running people off or impressively disinterested.

That seems pretty condescending. What have I done to upset you, alvarro?

Opey has been allowed to return to both the games and the forums, because he fully admitted to the various rules violations for which he was being punished and asked for forgiveness of the staff. As long as you do not break the forum rules, I do believe people are entitled to reasoned and well-written opinions, even if I fully disagree with that opinion. As I do here.

The current staff (all 5 of us) are the most active group of SK Admins that I have seen in a long time (perhaps ever). Each person is pulling their weight toward making the game better. That includes running mini-RPs for people online, larger scale events (like bonanzas), building new and updating existing areas, ensuring a fair playing field and writing new code features that players have been requesting.

From any standpoint other than player count, there has never been a better time to pile on and start playing SK than today. And player count starts with curious folks like archaicsmurf. So come on back and get ready for Algorween with us!

Smurf,

The Sk playerbase has always been and will always be at odds with one another.
So that's the same as you remember it, I'm sure.
Our numbers are low but Finney has been engaging in PK pretty heavily on the darkie side. If you're up for a challenge, it might be worth rolling a lighty. However the lighties do have pretty solid numbers right now.
As for code changes, Dulrik has been working hard to modify the game in ways that make some of the time-sync issues less of a burden.
You can resurrect yourself if you're in a tribunal and can get tribunal outfitted with a semi-decent suit to quickly get your corpse back.
You can exchange loyalty tokens for excelerated Exp which makes the grind easier.
He's also expanded a couple of spells to other classes. (Consecrate and enchant)

Sk has it's pros and cons. But if you and other older players come back to it, an increased playerbase can solve one of our big problems.

Hope to see ya out there, man.
