"thanks for sharing her with us" is obviously a positive statement. However, the
definition of "but" shows that but could be replaced with "on the
contrary". I, too, read your sentence and thought "The second sentence is positive, and with "but" used as the conjunction, the first sentence MUST be negative in nature."
