Getting back to the topic....
I'd like to recommend deciding what background knowledge a characterhas when the backstory is drawn up. Other knowledge should be had by conversation. In a pinch, and if an area is generally known, it's all right to have a conversation with an NPC. But otherwise, why not create some roleplay by asking around a bit? It's fun.

No, this is enough to cover basic geograhy - which isn't the problem we're discussing. I don't think anyone minds that a new character knows where Teron is, or even how to find the Circle of the Holy. They're major settlements, after all. But it strains credulity that a common explorer reached the Lost Jungle, and not only lived to tell about it, but gave you a detailed map of the place. If in addition you know all about several other advanced locations .... it becomes clear you're using OOC knowledge inappropriately.
Cabals and tribunals have the responsibility not to accept members who can't or won't roleplay. Unreasonable knowledge should count against potential members.
