For those who wish to donate more, but also to preserve simplicity, why not add a link beneath the existing paypal links to a new SK webpage with more options, and an explanation for those new to the concept?

At the same time, instead of having a special title, add a simple image beneath the member information of each post, and then in the profile, also explained on the new page.

Each sort of donation would correspond to one of the coin values in game, and it shouldn't be hard to come up with an image to match. Hover the mouse over the image and have it display "copper patron," etc. Make the image a link to the donation page.

copper - one-time $5 donation
silver - $10 quarterly subscription
gold - one-time $20 donation
platinum - $25 quarterly subscription
obsidian - $10 monthly subscription (if monthly is possible)

Or some such. Simple, discrete, with no particular words to bicker over (and if history serves as example, whatever words are chosen, they'll be bickered about.)

My two coppers' worth. (And all I can afford to donate at present ) When my money situation gets better, I would personally prefer something like a five or ten dollar a month subscription - it's the cost of a movie and a drink a month, and it would be a lot easier for me to keep track of than a quarterly deal. My memory is about as sound as a sieve.

It sounds like a lot, added up, but it's still cheap in terms of the value of entertainment it gives, especially if you compare it to other addictions out there...and of course, it's optional.

Dulrik,

I feel as if I should take a moment to elaborate as to why I dislike the subscription service for myself. My bank set me up with an automatic savings plan withdrawl that happens at the beginning of the month. If I have a few months where money isn't an issue and I am not forcing myself to be careful with it, I tend to forget its there. When all of a sudden money is tight, I may have to spend it all on items/books/etc, and then pay overdraft fees because enough money wasn't there to cover an automatic withdrawl that I really didn't want in the first place. A donating subscription is the same way. I, personally, have never forgot to donate $10 a month to a Battlefield 2 clan I played with a while ago when I had the money, and saying I couldn't do it this month when I didn't have the cash on hand.

Make sense?

Sure, that makes sense. I'm going to change the titles to my new proposal for now, but that doesn't mean we are at final titles. The copper, silver, obsidian thing was a good and original new idea.

Agreed.

I also like the 'patron' word best out of the words used so far. Contributor might get confused with those who contribute time, art, area building, etc. whereas patron is fairly recogniseable as someone willing to give financial donations.

Philanthropist is a bit long and exotic for my taste...

from our TMS description:
Quote:
Shattered Kingdoms is a roleplay enforced mud which succesfully unites quality roleplay with the tactical considerations of challenging PK. Established in 1996, SK is considered one of the top muds out there today that are completely free - no pay to play, no pay for perks. In fact, no money changes hands between players and staff at all, as donations are not currently accepted.

probably time to change that.
