I was thinking about the often mentioned predicament of not being able to get a holy symbol, and I just realized one way to potentially solve (at least somewhat) this problem. Since regular old priests can't make sybmols anyway, maybe holy symbols would be able to be created by any high follower no matter the profession (and I imagine favored priests too, if people wanted that). The caveat would be that the symbol is just as symbol, no different than a real life person where a cross or what have you. You would then need a priest(favored again, I would imagine) to CONSECRATE the symbol which would provide the specific faith benefits it imparts.

It would only make sense that if a high follower can bring someone into the fold they could at least make a symbol. But to keep the true power of the faithful within the clergy, the consecration spell would be needed to make it more than just a piece of flair. Just a thought.

I can get behind this. (of course I don't have a problem letting any F3 creating a full-powered symbol, either, but this might be more sellable to the staff)

Would your theoretical unconsecrated symbol function as a key when necessary, or no?

Been brought up (though not the consecration part) and while I wish HFs could make symbols, I definitely don't think it will ever happen.

Also consecration would serve no purpose given that a favored priest could just make a symbol themselves.

I agree, but the consecration was exactly as you said, to be more sellable. Could you explain what the key would be for? I'm not following that.

I guess the way I pitched it, you're right. But I suppose the heavy mana cost of symbol making could be split between the two spells. So you could get your symbol from your F3 since there are no priests around, and then, it would be a less draining approach for the priest that you run into later, to consecrate it for you, rather than having to create and consecrate.

Some locations require you to have a key (that happens to be your symbol) to access. I was just wondering if the shell of a key would serve that purpose.

Perhaps if it snapped . . . Hmm.

Oh, okay. Sorry, I've only really ever spent any time in one religion and I've never seen symbols work as keys. But if that was the case, then I wouldn't see why the symbol couldn't be used this way. And I suppose maybe as you said, an unconsecrated symbol might be prone to snapping once its served its purpose.

There you go. Unconsecrated symbols.

Except that's against the rules.

If there was an immortal around to punish you for it, they could've been around to give you the real symbol in the first place.

So then pray for a symbol from time to time if you need one. Breaking the rules isn't a good way to go.
