For a "failed" skirmish I believe you just the message, you stop firing (if you can consider that failed). It was probably just an arrow size problem.

you don't fail skirmish

you either shoot the arrow, or you don't...there is no message. If you stop skirmishing all that happens is you get a little message saying "You stop skirmishing"

please know what you are talking about before speaking.
