The History of Craeftilin book doesn't work, as do most of the books in Craeftilin. I did the quests there yesterday and couldn't read any of those books that I found ;/.

Did you try opening the book? It needs to be opened to be read. There is a helpfile for read and one for books. It explains that you may:
read book 1
read book
open book
close book

When you open the book, and type read book, it will show you the table of contents. After that if you type read book it will continue through each page in succession. When you are finished with reading it will close automatically. After opening the book you may also read a specific page with the syntax above. If a certain book-type item does not have the keyword book, it would be read (text, tome, etc).

Achernar's right. I've had so many complaints about the Craeftilin books that I've gone back and double, triple, quadrupled checked them. They all work: you just need to be sure to open the book first.

It is strange to deal with . . . Some books work one way, some another. Once they are all changed over the questioning will stop.
