A tunnel full of murky water
This watery tunnel cuts through the solid stone of this cave
system.  The water here is full of countless tiny paticles, making it dark
and murky.  As far as you can judge, this tunnel appears to have been
created naturally by the gradual wearing away of the stone by the waters
which move through these caves.  The tunnel bends here to the west and opens
up into a cavern to the southeast.

You swim southeast.

A cavern full of murky water
The water of this tall cavern is full of countless tiny particles,
making it so murky that it is all but opaque.  Peering around
carefully, you see that this is a natural cavern, as the surfaces appear
entirely unworked.  The water here is quite warm, and you see tiny bubbles
and particles spewing from numerous holes in the floor.  Tiny mineral mounds
have built up around these holes.  This cavern is far higher than it is
wide, and you see that it continues above you.  A tunnel branches off to the
northwest from here.

[Spells help] etherealform
Syntax: cast 'etherealform'

Etherealform enables the caster to become immaterial and enter the ethereal plane. Because the ethereal plane coexists with the real world, the mage can see and move about as normal. However, the mage can also move through some doors and even some walls as if they were not even there. A mage can also not be attacked or affected by anything while on the ethereal plane, except by another mage who is also ethereal. Of course, the mage can not affect the real world either.

my question is if someone is ethereal how can they drown?

-While ethereal you shouldn't get drown.
-I think that drowning time should be increased to something more close to RL drowning.

I think the time for drowning is alright although it is really fast if you think about it since roughly 1 minute RL time is 1 hour IC time then drowning in 10 seconds is like being underwater for 10 minutes. But while being ethereal if doors don't affect you then water shouldn't either.

There's water in the ethereal plane too.

While randomly teleporting hold the following spells.

Fly <- Falling is bad
Eth <- Baddies hurt
Airy <- Water kills
Invis <- Because being invis is nice

Detects are nice as well, but not required until you get into an interesting ares. Also, if you find yourself drowning by randomly teleporting, just *recall*. So don't random teleport with less than 50% PE.

This has killed me at least a half dozen times. But it's so worth it if you don't know the mud well.

Thanks I'll keep that in mind. Yeah it's fun when I run across some place I hadn't been like that place. Too bad I couldn't find it again and now my corpse is gone. :( Oh well at least I know to hold onto airy water now as well.

Get the waterbreathing wand from the Torrum and keep it in hand. Airy water *eats* mana.

Then if you find yourself under water. zap self

Hopefully you spent the time to master wands. ;)

So, brandishing a stave requires 5 minutes? What a novelty...

Just uh, don't think about it too hard.
It's a feature.
