Quick question: Shouldn't charm person count as initiating hostilities?

Someone cast charm person at me today and when my character auto-retaliated with a punch I was the one charged with attempted murder. I found this odd since this individual is the one who attacked me first and because there are laws on the books against charm person. I don't think the use of charm person is part of the law code though.

i'm not sure if it's been changed or fixed, If not then someone can be on mode stun and if you're on mode kill and they attack you then they can report you for the attempted murder.

If you read the laws of most kingdoms, you'll find that it is against the law to use lethal force, even if you are the one who gets attacked.

Charm person is definitely against the law and your attacker could have been reported.

I checked outlaw memory and there was no crime listed nor did I make any automatic shouts concerning being attacked.

But the book of King's Law definitely lists charm person as a crime.

RP crimes do not equal coded crimes. There have been times where..having a weapon wielded in a city was illegal. That's just something that PCs have to enforce.

For the actual list of coded crimes, go to a judge a type 'outlaw laws'. It will give you the crimes in that kingdom, and the punishments in that kingdom. (These vary from place to place.)

For example, there might be a kingdom where attempted mugging (mode stun) isn't outlawed but attempted murder (mode kill) is.

More than likely they failed the actual casting of the charm person spell, which, as I recall, actually ends up for some odd reason making your first strike be the "aggressive" one. Same thing happens if you cast spear of faith at someone who your spear doesn't affect: Their strike against you is the only crime reported, IIRC.

I think this is a bug and has been one for a long time, just often one that doesn't come into play.

The reason you couldn't report it is because you are a tribunal member in your own kingdom. Some halfwits QQed some years ago that since their characters which were at odds (read actively attacking Taslamar or in a cabal/tribunal at war with the Peacekeepers) with my keeper swashbuckler at the time shouldn't be able to be attacked and killed, and then reported for their crimes afterward. The only way you can report someone if you are a tribunal member is if you actually die. It is stupid, and [REDACTED], but proof that QQ can go a long way.

Piggy-backing on this post:

Should Charm person still be in affect when the charmed person is in jail? I thought jails were no magic rooms.

None of the spells a character has cast on himself will be dispelled upon entering jail. Interestingly enough, though, charm person will not be dispelled if a charm does not enter the room with the caster.

I also got jailed while the charm person spell on me never dropped, that was pretty annoying.
