He's naked. Was he carrying the corpse when this happened? He certainly looks like he ought to have been able to carry it, and if there was a lull in combat he might've had time to pick the corpse up.

He was not carrying the corpse and there was no lull in combat.

I'm still assuming this is not universally broken and that this is some bizarre edge case. In which case I need more information about when it works and doesn't work to fix it.
