Persuade and Ethereal can rock, too bad the success rate is of the order of that person that posted over 40 miss trip attempts. The list of things that you can persuade a person to do is massively smaller than charm person. You can't make someone part of your group, even for a while. You can only pretty much do 3 commands with persuade now:

per x c buff bard
per x say, "This skill sucks."
per x release 1

per x kill y

I agree that persuade being successful should not count as a crime. After all, how would someone duped into doing something actually know that they did something wrong? Furthermore it counts as assault and battery. I don't even know how to explain that one.

However, I don't see the need for people to go on and on about how persuade sucks. It's a great skill.
