Perhaps since he's already in combat with someone else and you're not im combat with him yet? Perhaps the thing hes fighting is in front of him in a sense?

Never played a merc so im jsut guessing.

This wasn't a merc, and i doubt it makes a difference.

The NPC that was attacking the berserker is in the way because they are already engaged in combat, and are in a differant group as you. It's one of them strange quirks about trip that has been brought up before yet never changed.

If that is indeed true, it'd be lovely if somebody could fix that. Normally it might not make a big difference (you can kick dirt, bash, attack, etc.) but in this case the target is a barb. Fairly frustrating.

I was always under the impression, since reposts to earlier complaints about this, that it was a feature.

To trip someone they need to be targetting you, or someone in your group (along with the other obvious things).

I've gotten the "Someone is in your way" message before when I've tried to rescue another character and just happened to fail the check [i.e., I was able to try it again and succeed the next round]. Maybe this is a similar situation?

I actually suspected this was the cause all along, but i wanted to make sure.

As for V'klya's comment, I tried several times to trip them and received the same message. Besides, the trip fail messages is different.

That's not quite accurate since you can use trip to start combat. I can trip somebody staring right at me and doing nothing, but i can't even attempt to trip somebody who's fighting somebody else and looking away?
