If the conditions aren't right to call lightning, but you try to cast it at a target anyways, they attack you. I'd be all right with that if there was some other way to tell whether the weather is right.

Currently, c 'call lightning' no matter what the weather will ask you for a direction. Could it be programmed to say "ready to call", "need more wind," "need more rain", and "need more rain/wind"? Either that or adjust the weather command so it can tell you exactly when you can call?

Code:
>weather
It's raining very hard, mild, and windy.
The wind blows from the southeast at 22 knots.
It feels like lightning could strike at any moment. <-new line

Code:
>weather
It's raining very hard, mild, and calm.
The wind blows from the southeast at 4 knots.
It feels too calm to call lightning. <-new line

Something like that?

edit: you might want to make the message shaman only so as to not tip anybody off, but that sort of sucks for people with scrolls/wands.

That would be a neat passive skill for shamans, scouts, and warlocks. Or, an addition to control weather... when you've reached the proper conditions, you get an echo stating that the weather is proper for call lightning.

Getting a skill is obnoxious, just have it appear in the weather description. Who needs a skill just to tell them whether they can cast the spell or not?

Here Here. I second the motion

I'd oppose this. There's no reason why people who know nothing of the spell should be able to tell if conditions are right for it. Anyone who uses the spell routinely already knows. Wand users can always ask ICly.

But it'd help out noob shamans. Make it innate for all shamans, or something.

Then just give this to Shamans

Shamans already get told what's wrong with the weather when they cast the spell in bad conditions. Since they get control weather at the same level (and at least in my experience, from the same trainer), it takes all of fifteen minutes to figure it out. Playing around with these spells is a lot of fun; I see no reason to change them.

Maybe you're not getting that same error message when you cast 'call lightning' from an item? I'd certainly agree that's a bug. It should say something about it not being wet enough if you cast when it's sunny, for example. Of course, you only get the message after you've failed the spell.

But only if they try to cast it first, which will aggro a NPC (even if it can't be casted).

Though I suppose you can cast it on yourself, but that doesn't make a hell of a lot of sense ICly.
