I'm sure this isn't a bug just my mis-understanding of the spell...

But if I cast fireball in the wild and specify a direction and a distance it tells me I'm out of range, even if I only specify 1 range.

If I specify a direction but with no range it tells me I must specify a range...

I can cast it in the room I am in fine...but that is not always the desired use of fireball for obvious reasons...

I'm sure this is the way its sopose to be as I'm not the only warlock and I'm sure others have seen this as well...

I guess I just would like some confirmation that I'm just not being a [REDACTED] when trying to cast it.

Very few spells or weapons reach one square in the wilderness, since one square there is one league (quite a distance, look it up). Spells that reach 1 room indoors might not do the same outside.

Yeah, thats what I figured...I had assumed since lightning bolt does, and earthquake too, I just found it odd that fireball didn't...

The wilderness rooms are dealing with variable distances rather than specific distance. Think of it as a 3 mile squared area. You could be anywhere within that square. The next wilderness area over represents another 3 miles squared area. Your target could be anywhere within that area as well. If both of you are on the edges of the squares closest to each other, then you would only be feet apart. If you're on the fatherest corners from each other, then you could be 6 miles apart. So you're dealing with imagined variable distances. Bows only have a range of one wilderness room. As do other things that can strike in the wilderness like earthquake. Because they can conceivable hit a certain length of distance, they are allowed to strike into the next square over.

Another way to look at it is to see how far things shoot in a city. Fireball only goes 2 city squares in distance. Thats not very far. Its not a long range spell. Only bows that shoot 4 city squares can be used outside.
Earthquake only hits to city squares over, but it does so in every direction, so when added together that does have a range of 4 city squares.

This is by no means a flawless way of looking at things, but its how I justify it in my own mind.

Again...I'm not complaining I just wanted to know if I was doing something wrong, the answer seems more than clear at this point...

This has always bugged me as well, I mean the wizard throws a fireball, its a lethal spell and he wants to shoot it as far as possible, also in this case I think a warlock comanding the winds could easily shoot the fireball quite far. Its not like he throws it with his hands or something.
Not a bug though it has been like that for as long as I remember

(I also like the idea of a warlock leading an army to battle and shooting fireballs towards his opponents in the wilderness)

[EDIT: I am not sure to how that change would overpower Warlocks thou it would be a good adittion to wilderness combat somewhere , where scouts have the upper hand]

OK, now I have another problem with fireball, and this one does not take place in the wilderness...

Code:
c fireball s 1
You see nothing you can attack there.

Why does the face that I can't SEE anyone there matter? Maybe I know someone is there and even though I can't see them I'd still like to fireball the room. I am targetting the room, not any specific PERSON so why does the fact that the room is empty prevent me from flinging a fireball into that area?

You should be able to, I forget the exact syntax. I know you are definitely able to fire room spells if you can't see the room.

Try "c fireball s"?
