Post subject:  Dispel magic

The target is a giant, I'm not sure if dispel magic actually falls under a mental attack but I've noticed that with my 9 art necromancer that this spell is incredibly difficult to land on anything. Even things with 0 saves I just can't get it to work at all. Is it supposed to be this hard to land a spell?

NPCs cheat. We all know that. How Kin used to have sick mana and concentration? No PC ever will have such stats. So my guess is they have buffed saves as well, with fort/will/refl to rise as they are higher level.

I wouldn't be surprised if a lvl 51 NPC would have innate 50 will/fort/refl.

I've had problems against players as well. Namely when screwing around with Xenji and trying to dispel his elemental and another warlock that it screwed me with.

One wonders why you only have 9 art...

I can believe that you failed dispel 5 times before it worked. Doesn't dispel magic have a save and then a check for each different spell, so that you could have landed the dispel but not actually have caused any spells to drop? It could have just been bad luck: 50/50 chance would fail five times in a row one out of thirty-two times. And perhaps the NPC and elementals in question also have better saves than you think.

IIRC, Art doesn't benefit dispel magic, cancellation, or similar magic-countering abilities. Art just works against fortitude/willpower/reflex saves, and something other than that is going on.

I would agree to strengthen dispel magic's chance of success only if the casting time were increased. As is, I think it would be too strong of a spell if it always worked.

I will agree, no change is needed. As it is now, most elementals can be dispelled in one shot, certain cabal spells might be significantly harder, but then again, what's the point if you can dispel them in one shot. Leave it how it is. My guess is yes, indeed, Vezu probably has some ridiculous stats/saves as a lot NPCs do.

I have no problems at all dispelling undead or elementals. Don't forget that the charm/ele/control has the same will save as the controller/charmer for dispel magic. So if the controller has a high will then they will shrug off the dispel. It is my understanding that resistance will not help this, but will... will.
