This dragon has been slept by another through the use of the sleep spell. Now, we prepare to fight it and I start singing my favourite song:

Code:
[HP: 99%] [ME: 89%] [PE: 99%]
> sing done
You begin to sing.
You sing: Done now be,

[HP: 99%] [ME: 89%] [PE: 99%]
> dance

Twah asks 'Ready then?'
You sing: This war is over.

[HP: 99%] [ME: 87%] [PE: 98%]
> You begin to dance.

[HP: 99%] [ME: 87%] [PE: 98%]
>
You sing: Done now be,
You continue to dance.

[HP: 99%] [ME: 84%] [PE: 97%]
> l

An Icy Cavern
The caverns here, though winding and beautiful, are unnaturally smooth.
The walls of perfectly frozen ice could not have been smoothed by humanoid
hand.  The wind does not reach this far inside the cave, and the faint odors
of something musky and something burning hang in the air.
It's raining lightly, cool, and very, very windy.
Obvious exits: n s
(Charmed) A broad-shouldered black bear growls under his breath.
A broad-shouldered black bear growls under his breath.
Twah is flying here.
A white dragon is sleeping here.

[HP: 99%] [ME: 84%] [PE: 97%]
>
Your off-key note ends the song.
You stop singing.
A white dragon wakes up, and clambers to his feet.
You continue to dance.
A white dragon looks extremely angry and charges!
A white dragon looks extremely angry and charges!
A white dragon bites at your chest, causing a deep gash.

It looks like the songs of sleep effect overwrites the sleep spell effect and if I hit an off-key then it can wake up - This shouldn't happen. You should also be able to cast sleep on someone kept in sleep by the songs and then stop singing and they're still asleep.

It looks like the problem is something with keeping the two effects seperate while they are now considered the same.

This is a longshot, but since it applies to positive affects, maybe it's the answer.

Your songs of sleep, is more powerful than the sleep spell. Thus, the penalty that gets taken into account is yours, not the sleep spell. (Sort of like if you have bless cast on you, and then a rally cry, or songs of battle, one of the two will get overwritten because the bonus is better with the other spell/song.

Thus, when you fail at singing, you get screwed. Poozer.

Now, any hostile action will cause a person to rouse from sleep, prior to which when it was only a damaging attack, sleep was overpowered.

Example. I have a swirly orb. Overpowered sleep stave. I brandish it to put three out of four guards to sleep. I think, "I'll just brandish it again to get the fourth." So I do, and then they all wake up and then possibly go back to sleep. So now the one that was awake is now asleep and two of the sleeping ones are now awake and thrusting a bastard sword through my larnyx.

*Any* hostile action will wake up a slept PC/NPC. Many bard songs, dominate/charm spells, maledictions, etcetera. Even c sleep X, if failed will wake them back up.

Songs of sleep shouldn't be considered a hostile action since you won't get outlawed for it and neither NPCs nor players attack the bard if he starts singing it.

It is a hostile action in combat if you ask me. It may not be in an Inn or an RP session, but in combat.... definetly a hostile action.

Actually, it is a hostile action. You cannot get outlawed for it but some NPCs will even attack you for trying to put them to sleep via Songs of Sleep. Just try to put to sleep the delves under tethos by the Matron.

How the hell do you put a dragon to sleep with either? I think all dragons should not be able to be put to sleep. :o

Dragons do sleep, in fact according to lore when they sleep it is something in the number of years of how long Rip Van Winkle went to sleep. I see nothin' wrong with it.

Songs of sleep isn't a hostile action, in or out of combat.

All I said, is that some NPCs will attack you for trying to put them to sleep. Nothing more, nothing less. If a NPC attacks you for trying to do something(in this case try to put them asleep, via bard song), then, by the definition of an aggressive action, you are doing an agressive action.
