Code:
You strike suddenly, slicing at a young elf's chest!  Some GUTS fall!
A young elf is mortally wounded, and will die soon, if not aided.
A young elf is DEAD!!
You hear a young elf's death cry.

Code:
You slice a young elf's chest HARD, shattering his ribs!
A young elf is mortally wounded, and will die soon, if not aided.
A young elf is DEAD!!
A young elf's finger is skillfully severed from his hand.

End of combat and I have auto gold and auto junk on. Seems to happen often when the corpse has items other than coins.

I've experienced and seen this bug as well. A specific instance I recall was with a group of 4 people - the person usually finishing off the enemies was unable to automatically junk or loot the gold, but it seemed as though everyone else could. Very odd.

The bug being shown in the log is due to the NPC dying, yet not due to the damage of a PC. What's happening is that you're damaging him within an inch of his life, yet not killing him, and he's then dying of his own HP drain.

I'm almost positive that this is because of a recent code change that cleared up the nasty annoying bug of being stuck at -4% HP, yet not gaining or losing HP. It's worth the little inconvience of NPCs dying on their own, which will virtually cease once you're higher level, since getting a NPC between death and consciousness for any extended period of time becomes much more unlikely.
