Okay, so I set mode stun to fight a law NPC, but then something goes awry:

Your divine wrath lightly hits a centaur cityguard's waist.
A nightling's divine wrath barely hits a centaur cityguard's right leg.
A nightling's divine wrath hits a centaur cityguard's waist.
A centaur cityguard stabs a nightling's left ankle, gashing a small wound.
A centaur cityguard stabs a nightling's left wrist, causing a big gash.
A centaur cityguard stabs a nightling's chest, barely wounding her.
Overall, a centaur cityguard has quite a few wounds.
[HP: 56%] [ME: 66%] [PE: 79%]

A gangly female halfling punches at a nightling's face, slightly bruising her cheek.

Then I set mode stun again for the other NPC, but now my pet decides to switch to mode kill:

I know for a fact that the nightling was mode stun since it was just stunning zakami before I entered the city. What gives?
