Water elementals have reach, that's one of their features.

I've never seen NPCs trip people in back rows, though.

Actually, I take that back. I get tripped by NPCs in back rows pretty frequently. NPC mercenaries that you level on just tend not to have reaching weapons equipped.

It's just a feature.

Yeah really, in which case we should be able to trip mounts and have it effect the rider too!

You obviously haven't used a pet in the past few weeks. Because the 'Pet Wars' has been hit really hard already.

Also, the part of mounting the pet isn't what add's the extra strength to the player, its the part of the pet being used as a meat shield in front is what causes the 'Pet Wars'.
