Code: A burly dwarven monk starts to concentrate.
A nightling's divine wrath starts to melt a burly dwarven monk's chest. You slash a burly dwarven monk's chest HARD, cutting through his ribs! You slash a burly dwarven monk's chest HARD, cutting through his ribs! You slash a burly dwarven monk's mouth, knocking out a few of his teeth! Overall, a burly dwarven monk looks pretty hurt. --( 46)o(100)o( 49)o(Empire)--> A burly dwarven monk utters the words, 'yrawzgculatz'. Your shield blocks a burly dwarven monk's attack. You feel immense pain as a burly dwarven monk directs a column of fire to strike you. --( 39)o(100)o( 49)o(Empire)--> A burly dwarven monk starts to concentrate. A nightling demolishes a burly dwarven monk's chest with her divine wrath. A nightling misses a burly dwarven monk. You raise your weapon and slash it deep into a burly dwarven monk's chest! You miss a burly dwarven monk. You slash a burly dwarven monk's mouth, knocking out a few of his teeth! Overall, a burly dwarven monk is in awful condition. What's with that shield block in the middle? He was the only monk in the room, and he was casting, so he wasn't punching me. The flamestrike didn't hit my pet next to me, so it's like I shield blocked it. I don't think that is supposed to happen. |

The monk failed at casting the spell, it happens very rarely but all NPCs have the potential of miscasting spells. |

Except the monk didn't fail the cast because it hit the pet. I've seen this happen before as well. Last time I saw it on here someone explained it as some of the NPC spells doing physical rather than magical damage, or something like that, making it so it could be shield blocked or dodged. Who knows if that's what's actually going on? |

maybe the monk is flagged as a paladin/hellion, they can get an attack in while they are casting it is called "combat casting" |

That's not how combat casting works. Not sure what causes this bug. |

Yeah, if it was combat casting then his attack would be during the normal combat round. |

If the monk had combat casting, it would appear he began casting during the round of combat, but before his attack. This may somehow lead to a funny situation where an attack is stuck in some sort of lag queue. The interesting thing to observe would be whether this happens sometimes/always/never when the spell is begun 'outside' of the combat round itself. |

The interesting thing to observe would be whether this happens sometimes/always/never when the spell is begun 'outside' of the combat round itself. I've never seen such an issue crop up with using spells over all the paladins and hellions I've played and I've certainly made liberal use of flamestrike on my current paladin. |

Indeed. But in all your experience and success, however, you have not yet played an NPC. |

I'm going to guess that you had disbanded your group and had ordered the nightingale to start combat then started hitting the monk, and that the monk had been targeting it up until the flamestrike hit, at which point the AI code for target switching kicked in as soon as the cast went through. The ordering of the attack happening "before" the flamestrike, as well as the extra "in between rounds" attack is just a quirk of the code that causes AI to attack a pets owner. |
