Your aggressive move destroys your sanctuary spell!
The white aura around your body fades.
Your C Major chord makes an arot'xlotl's heart rattle in its chest.

XXX dodges an arot'xlotl's attack.

The names and cabal abilities have been edited out, but this log snippet shows that sanc + bard chords is messed up. Even if engaged in combat, and untargeted, using c major will break sanctuary.

Does fireball? My understanding was that if your move would initiate combat (aka aggressive spell) that it would break sanctuary.

No idea, but I can't see how the two are related.

If you are already engaged in melee combat, and don't target the spell (i.e. hit the target you're already fighting while under sanc) it won't break sanctuary.

Actually, I always thought that if you were in combat you couldn't break sanc regardless of whether you targeted someone or not. I remember seeing paladins train by flamestriking new NPCs a room away before they killed the NPC they were fighting, so that they wouldn't lose sanctuary.

Ironically, if you're fighting someone and say, cast spear of faith on them, but then the combat round passes and they kill whoever they were fighting, then you'll break sanctuary spearing them even though you cast it without a target because it's seen as starting a new combat.

The code for sanctuary is quite screwy, and I've never really quite understood why it works the way it does, or anything about it, really. It's just a nice buff for tanks.

I've been told that sanctuary has some group-affecting properties, I've always not understood that.

What I have understood is that it is a useless PVE spell when many monsters just track you until they get through anyway.

Damage reduction is always nice.
