A naj slams into a darkbandit and sends him sprawling!
A naj's bash knocks the wind out of a darkbandit.
Ok.

You dodge a darkbandit's attack.
A darkbandit's punch at your right leg is deflected by some loose camouflaged leggings.
A naj winces as a series of fractures appears on its scale hide!
A naj's flaming bite starts a darkbandit's chest on fire.
A naj's flaming bite lightly burns a darkbandit's left leg.
A naj's flaming bite starts a darkbandit's chest on fire.
A matte-black halberd cleaves at a darkbandit's chest, DISEMBOWELING him!
A matte-black halberd cleaves a darkbandit's right finger, scratching it slightly.
You stab a darkbandit's mouth, knocking out a few of his teeth!
You strike suddenly, stabbing at a darkbandit's chest! Some GUTS fall!
A darkbandit dodges your attack.
Overall, a darkbandit has some big nasty wounds and scratches.

This keeps happening. The naj is not taking hits but its hide gets damaged when it attacks.

This happens all the time with NPCs. It's not a bug.

Any time a NPC strikes, is struck, or is shield blocked there's a chance it will fracture the hide.

Also because flame breaks on steel.

OP is not a bug. It's just like when your steel sword fractures when striking someone's adamantite armor. He's hitting you bare handed and it's breaking his hand. Flame breaking on steel probably is a bug though.

Scale, not flame.

Flame breaks on pretty much everything.
