Post subject:  Negation and poor climbing skills can cancel intimidation

I was climbing through the mountains and had this:
Code:
south
You attempt to climb but slip and fall at around ten feet.
You resist the effects of the stoic gateguard's spell!
You regain your nerve.
You aura is discharged.

I wasn't sure if I just happened to move during a tick and everything just ran out at that point, and the resisting message was just... something weird. So I put back up my aura of negation and:
Code:
kil stoic
Your attack falters as you near the stoic gateguard.

You walk south.

A Small Cavern
This tiny cavern has, by the looks of things, been converted into a
rather large room of some sort.  The floor has been sanded down over time
and is quite smooth.  The northern end of the cavern seems to be blocked by
an artifical wall of some sort.  The sound of water grows stronger here, as
does the chill on your back.  All around you, shadows flicker.  Two small
passages lead to the east and west where the sound of sluggish shuffling can
be heard.

Obvious exits: e s w
(Glowing) A silver key encased in a glass locket lies discarded here.
( 5) A scrumptious looking steak is here.
A huge ogre stands here glaring menacingly.

A Roughly-Carved Passage
This passage seems almost cut straight from the surrounding mountain in
an unnatural way.  The walls, while fairly smooth, are rocky and jut out
in several places, making travel slow and precarious.  A strong smell of must
lingers in the air and the sounds of dripping water can be heard far off to
the north.  A cloud of darkness hovers over the tunnel and a sense of fear
radiates from the north.
Obvious exits: n cave
A large opening leads back to freedom here.

Hills
You are standing at the edge of the steep Black Mountains of
hhhhh   the eastern empire.  The area abounds with legends of strong men
^^*^h   who have become lost here and their spirits that inhabit these
^^^^h   peaks.  The rocks have been recently dug away from a cave in
here.  A waning crescent moon hangs in the sky.  It's mostly
clear, freezing, and there is absolutely no wind.

You climb west.

The Black Mountains
You are standing amid boulders and smaller rocks of onyx and
hhhhh   dark granite.  There is very little soil here but a few small
h^*?^   plants and lichens manage to survive and grow.  You feel very
^^^^^   much alone here.  A waning crescent moon hangs in the sky.  It's
mostly clear, freezing, and there is absolutely no wind.

In the Black Mountains
A small hut is built into the side of the mountain.  There is
yhhhh   no clue to what is inside from here.  A waning crescent moon
hh*^?   hangs in the sky.  It's mostly clear, cool, and there is
   ?^^^^   absolutely no wind.

I didn't see this before the reboot, but I believe some other code I just put in for another fix will also correct this problem.

I haven't checked this particular setup that I first mentioned, but I recently was intimidated without the aura, brought it up and got this and regained my nerve. It is possible this regaining of nerve was normal, but next time the aura dropped I checked and got this:
Code:
kil spir
Your attack falters as you near an animated form.

{ 98|100| 92}{2pm:1214}{1 obsidian, 7 platinum, 7 gold, 3 silver, 2 copper}

nega
You surround yourself in an aura of magic negation.
You resist the effects of an animated form's spell!
You regain your nerve.

Intimidate counts as being under a magical effect, and therefore is going to be negated by aura.

I don't think it should be, and I don't think it is. I am almost positive I still could be intimidated under negation.

Raising your aura of negation will result in a burst of magical dissipation on the barbarian. However, the aura doesn't protect the barbarian from new magical effects in any way. Your protection from magical effects is your magic resistance value and it applies equally regardless of whether or not you are using aura of negation.

So this part isn't a bug?

As long as intimidation is considered a magical effect, it's not a bug. But I could personally see it going either way.

I've always thought of intimidation as the big evil guy standing there giving the most frighting evil eye you've ever seen, which to me isn't really magical at all. But at the same time, an MR barb should pretty much laugh at the hellion's attempt to intimidate him since without the spells, the hellion stands almost no chance. Which of course might be all the more reason to let hellions have intimidate as a nonmagical effect since without it, they're pretty well guaranteed to die to as soon as the barb bashes them.

Any hellion worth his salt shouldn't be hanging around in the first row where he can be bashed though.
