You stop using a steel pole-mace with an oak haft.

You wield a steel pole-mace with an oak haft in your hand.
A steel pole-mace with an oak haft feels like a part of you!

That polemace is medium sized and yet, I didn't get the too big message. Is this intended or a bug?

If you wielded it straight out of the store, it's not medium sized.

I'm also not certain that weapons give you the "too big" or "too small" messages.

Code:
A large, spiked head of hardened steel crowns this well-made polemace.
It is attached to an unadorned haft of polished oak, and has the length of a
full-grown male human.  The lacquered surface of the haft gleams faintly
whenever light plays across its surface.

This spiked pole-mace is a medium-sized mace made of tanso steel.

As usual, incorrect

Just tested it with other medium weapons that I am proficient, you are correct

You do can weild one size bigger/smaller items, they simply lose in efficiency if you do that. Being a small sized creature alllows you to wear tiny/small/medium items. But if you wear tiny armor, for example, it loses in armor value, if you wear medium weapons, they lose in accuracy etc.

As long as it's not too heavy, you can, yes.

For instance, without str mods, my elf can't hold a medium polemace. She can use one that's sized small, though.
