We're in a recession and apparently getting coffers drained pretty low, but I'd literally just put in 2.5 obsidian and nobody had attacked in the meantime:

The Magistrate's Office

from the middle of the ceiling, spilling out yellow light across this
office.

An insane peasant stands here, gibbering maniacally to himself.

Yea, not sure if this is happening in Exile too, but I watch guards disappear ALL the time. It says XXX fades out of existence. The guard is gone after that and it is normally sentinels I see this happening with. Not sure if this is a bug or as intended.

It's not a summon - as you can see here, the guard spawned, wielded its weapons as usual, and then simply didn't exist after that. Very wierd.

Nah, I don't believe so simply for the fact that they "fade out of existence" and I get no reports for missing peacekeepers.

If we're going to theorycraft, I'd wager that a guard is brought away from home, another guard spawns, and some new-fangled "keep the guards from being duplicated" mechanic erases the difference. After all, this seemed to happen during an area tick. I wonder if the location of the guard during recruitment impacts its perception of itself as "out of place" once it no longer moves according to a pathing script and instead due to PC movement.

I experienced a bug of the same flavor back when removing a hammer of light caused it to fade away infinity times and crash the MUD. I prayed about it and sent a PM to an immortal.

Can this bug be intentionally replicated?

i can't make it happen, but I often wonder if it takes from the tribunal account. Especially since I haven't seen it happen in other cities.

I have been looking into this and found a possible explanation for the Sentinels; however, this is not an issue that identically affects and/or would explain the issue with the cowled figures. I've got to do some more digging, but the wheels are in motion.
