You know...before I became an imm, I never had anything but a dial-up connection, usually somewhere between 14.4 and 28.8. I played two of the more combat command-intensive classes (priest and sorceror).

I never even thought to use my connection as an excuse for needing to build triggers for use during combat. I never considered blaming my connection for if or when I died (though falling completely link-dead isn't a bad reason for dying sometimes). I simply played the game as best I knew how, using my own abilities and not a computer's reflexes substituted for my own.

Before you became an IMM Algorab, I can recall my Amiga still been a decent computer and trust me back then in Greece the best speed you could see would be less than 33.6k for sure, I know ppl were on the net using 4800 or 9600bps modems back then. So just do the comparison of a 14.4k modem vs a 33.6k back then and a 56k now vs a DSL/cable today.

Anyway, if you think this is cursable offense, curse anyone that uses triggers. But also add that to the rules of SK :P

[sarcasm]Should multiple-commands aliases be cursed also? The commands are made automatically by typing a single 0 or whatever you called the alias, it's not the player's skills that type them fast.[/sarcasm]

I played on a 56k up till about 8 or 9 months ago. What is wrong with dial up on a text game? You're acting as though you have some huge penalty for having a dial-up modem.

I never had any problems with a dial-up. I think some triggers could be cute though, especially for [REDACTED] that spam send you tells after double and triple voodooing you in attempts to set your triggers off.

And who cares about skill in a voodoo trigger. I'd just ask, what skill? Mages are no longer allowed to have the massive hpz they need to survive such massive damage. There's other self automating triggers that people use to plevel with anyway that are more offensive then a trigger that goes off when another player uses a world range skill in duplicates and triplicates. I'm glad that that gate nerf to voodoo went in.

I know there's a difference in the speeds and a difference in the differences between the speeds, but given that even when I lived within 100 miles of the mud server, I still had to go through about 15 hops to get to it, having a DSL line now (vs. a 56k modem) doesn't mean that everything is all cake and pie.

You and I already had a chat about triggers and why and when they're breaking the rules or not. I still maintain that having triggers around from previous characters is simply asking for trouble, but nowhere did I say here that combat triggers were cursable. All that I said what that I never saw a need to use them, nor did I never consider blaming my connection for my failures in combat.

In addition, getting sarcastic here doesn't make you a BMOC (big man on campus) or anything; it just makes you look petty. Plus, with an alias, it still requires the player to do something in order for the alias to happen. Triggers don't require the player to interact with the game at all.

I'd be interested in hearing the answer to the following question. If someone has a trigger, is it curseable to intentionally set off that trigger? In my own opinion, no one should have triggers that would be a problem in such a case unless they are willing to take that chance.

There isn't a huge difference on this mud between a 28.8 modem and cable, that I can tell.

Like I said, in my case not only I am not 100 miles away from the server but at the other side of the planet but also I have a crappy ISP that never gives me more than 44k. And having used T3 to play SK some times also, I can assure you there is a HUGE differense when it comes to PK, just like in every game on a network.

PS: If you want I can copy/paste a traceroute from a T3 server near here to the mud, just to see the hops/lag.

I'd say I'm at least as far away from the server as you are, and I played off a 28.8 modem for years with no problem.

I use a crap [REDACTED] dialup connection, with an average dl rate of 2-3 kbs. And I also have to manage through the lag of going to the states and back, yet it is bareable.

I would support banning all triggers because it automates your character, instead of you actually controlling him. Why not set up aliases instead. Where you might hit 1 and it automaticly pulls out a spirit aura potion and quaff its. Having a trigger for voodoo lets you become protected against the spell while possibly not even being on your pc. And your character becomes automated without your own action.

Someone should take the discussion on links and triggers from the actually discussion of bugs and put it into gameplay. :wink:
