Alright, I recently got in a fight with a griffon barbarian. Here's what happened.

He bashes to start it off and I have 22 dex. So we fight for a while and he gets first attacks in each round. He wins.

How does the initiative system work? I figure I should be the one attacking first in each round.

From what Ive seen, there is an initiative check only at the start of battle (who starts combat does not seem to factor in to the initiative however), but that order of combat remains steady throughout the rest of the battle.

So if the griffon barbarian goes before you in the first "full" round of battle, he will continue to be the first one getting attacks in every round.

PS: this is only my observations, may not even be close to the actual mark

Actually, the use of commands can alter the intiative. I've seen a failed dirt kick lose my character the initiative, and a successful one win it back again.
